They're roughly equivalent in terms of implementation and technical power. Mercurial's command line interface is closer to Subversion's, and hides some of the dangerous features by default, while still having them available if you need them. The great thing is you can try both tools against Subversion now and get some idea of how each feels to you. Look for hgsubversion or git-svn.
