George,

My suspicion here is that you didn't actually reset the repository, or
rather, didn't do it prior to switching to git. Try these steps:
* Change the repository to SVN.
* Reset the source repository
* Confirm the svn-history is deleted (for your own peace of mind)
* Change the repository to git (which I believe will remain untouched.)

I'm pretty confident those steps don't erase anything in your git
repostiory, as was evidenced by your SVN repo artifacts remaining.
