Whatever you do, however, must align with the original license on the
project, which you may generally not remove or modify.
Your changes are naturally under whatever compatible license you want, but
the original contributors still have to have all their rights preserved.

Also note that in some development communities, a fork is a rather
heavy-handed and hostile act, essentially saying "I can't work with you
guys, I'm setting up my own shop". In the modern day of DVCS fancypantsery,
this might be slightly less so, but some still subscribe to the classical
notion of a fork and may get rather upset.

In general, it tends to be a bit more beneficial for the community as a
whole if you can aid and extend the existing project with patches and
improvements, assuming it's in-line with their goals. Nothing stops you
from making a friendly fork while working on your patches, but you might
want to mention the heritage of the project on your landing page, and the
intent of your fork.
