We have looked at different options, but we really need version control. We 
have quite a few authors, and also have a need to revert back if someone 
makes a mistake such as a global change that can't easily be undone.

However, what we don't really need is the full historical versioning. Is 
anyone aware of tools that could take occasional historical snapshots of 
the version control, and make a backup, so that we can reset the project?
