Hi Yves, Let me start by saying that nobody thinks you did anything wrong. Even if you had copied someone else's code wholesale with that person's permission, that is actually allowed in the qualification round (*not* in any other rounds).
The code-pair generation for this email was done by a low-precision, high-recall algorithm. If you aren't familiar with machine learning terminology, what that means is that it was tuned to generate few false negatives; and as a result, relatively many false positives. Why? Because the only consequence is an email, and there are a lot of people who really don't know the rules, so they work with a buddy, or they make their submission public on ideone and someone takes it. We want to make sure those people know they could get disqualified in later rounds. As an aside, the reason the qualification round allows copying is so that we don't have to disqualify a large number of people who mostly just made a mistake in a round that mostly exists to teach people how to compete in Code Jam. In your case, we actually found a file was similar to a file from the other user's submission on a different problem. One of my colleagues checked it by hand, and confirmed it was a false positive.
