Here are steps you could consider to get better at competitive programming

(1) Head on over to UVa Online Judge (which archives former competitive
programming questions)

https://uva.onlinejudge.org/index.php

and get yourself registered.

(2) Then browse to uHunt

http://uhunt.felix-halim.net/

and in the the "Your UVa username:" text field enter your UVa username.
Consider registering too.

(3) On the page that appears after inputting your username, scroll down to
the section titled

Competitive Programming Exercises

and click on "Introduction" (under "Book Chapters"). You might want to
start your quest by attempting the "Super Easy" problems under the section
titled

Getting Started: The Easy Problems.

In my mind, hands down, the Halim brothers have the best book (titled
"Competitive Programming" and currently in its third edition) and this
amazing tool that is uHunt that among other things, helps you pick problems
to solve based on your current problem-solving ability, has a community
chat and lists problems by category so you can work on areas you think you
need to brush up.

Hopefully with time and practice you'll get better and then solving the
problems on Google Code Jam will seem less daunting.

Good luck!
