An open practice mode is an entirely different challenge. The fact that not so many people are on the scoreboard right now is not an indication, because the universe of people that didn't qualify to DCJ R1 is entirely different, and they didn't have previous practices, so there may be a lot of people, like your friends, eager to try. We do not have computational resources to sustain a huge spark in demand right now (we are working on improving that for the future). Also, people unfamiliar with the system often ask questions. For instance, during each Qualification Round we receive several questions per minute. We don't have the resources to answer that kind of volume for a week long practice mode: we have to prepare the finals. Even if we tell people that we won't answer, we still get questions. And even if we don't answer them, filtering them out code...@google.com's inbox is still a lot of work (and we get important questions and feedback there that we can't afford to loose). We are planning on having a similar practice round for everybody at some point, depending on our availability. Worst case scenario, it will be shortly after the finals, feature the finals' problems as well. In the meantime, feel free to submit in your friend's behalf if they want to get a taste of DCJ.
