In competitive programming contest, you will see a lot of such MATH problems; 
some of them are even harder than this one.

You will need to know some linear algebra, probabilities and/or statistics in 
order to solve those ones.

The whole thing is not only testing how good you can code, but also how good 
your critical thinking and analysis are.
