We recently discovered that Gmail uses the 'primary' email of a contact in an interesting way:
* Create a new contact group * Add some users to the group * In Gmail, compose a new email * In the "To:" field, start typing the name of the group * Select the name of the group * The group name will be replaced with the name and *primary* email address of each member of the group (e.g., "Charlie Wood <[email protected]>"). But here's the rub: if none of the email addresses for a group member has the "primary" attribute set to "true", the email address for that member will be blank (e.g., "Charlie Wood <>"). The moral of the story is: be sure that exactly one email address is marked as "primary" when you create or update a contact, or an (admittedly obscure but still) important Gmail feature will break.
