You don't say what language(s) you're using to do these updates. I'm using C# in .NET and I've managed to create contacts for a GMail user as well as create Contact Groups for a user. This is with Google Apps for Your Domain. Mind you, I can't figure out how to create contacts filed in a contact group :(
http://code.google.com/apis/contacts/code.html is the starting point for accessing and updating contacts. The C# documentation is missing anything about contact groups, but the rest does seem to work. I have no idea about Hotmail or Yahoo, didn't even know you could update those remotely. As for Groupwise, if anyone has any libraries to access GW data, it would be Novell.
