I guess, soon gmail will support that. It's not as easy like one install
some program on windows :) I can imagine that would be huge task at google
to handle backward compatibility and provide front-end for gmail and update
their tools who are doing sync and all of that.
If that's the case, why they released it? So that developers can update
their application in advance and keep that support ready for their apps!
