Hi, I'm afraid there is no notification mechanism in Google Contacts, so the only alternative is polling. As you say, it is not efficient at all, so you will have to implement a caching mechanism. To make this mechanism performant it will have to implement two level caching, with a first level in Memcache backed up by a second level in Datastore. Even though, it will be a nightmare when you have to deal with thousands of Contacts.
