I know how to export my Google contacts to a vCard file using the web user interface by hand. I would like to automate this process, much as I am able to do when backing up my Google calendar, which provides me with a private URL which can be invoked by a scheduled job to pull down a file of all my events in ical format so I can back up my calendar periodically (so I'll have access to the data in the event of a failure in the cloud, or a service outage, or some other problem preventing me from getting to my calendar data). Where do I go to find the equivalent to this for my contacts?
