I checked the actual values in the xml feed text I am receiving directly from Google Contacts before any parsing occurs on my end. The character in question is represented by two bytes whose values are 195 and 173 (a Latin capital letter A with tilde followed by a soft hyphen). As I said in my original post, after my app sends the data to Google Contacts, the character looks fine when viewed in Google Contacts. Also, could you please show me what you entered into the playground to test this?
