DOH! Well, it turns out that the contacts read permission was never granted to the app by the administrator after the manifest was changed to need contacts access. It works fine. And I see where a defect is already logged that a null pointer exception is thrown when constructing the oath exception. Hopefully my problem post will help someone else who runs into a similar issue. Be sure your admin has regranted access if you change your manifest.
