Hi, there is an article about this: http://code.google.com/apis/desktop/articles/e19.html but you'd need PHP and a directly accessible database, dunno if such things are available on Google Sites.
One interesting solution is to host the gadget on Google Code. The Downloads section of every project has download stats for every file.
