Hi, When you install Google Desktop, it immediately begins indexing the email, files, and webpages already stored on your computer. By default, this only occurs while you aren't using your computer and may take several hours or more to complete.
But to index also content in the file(s) you must enable this in the option of Google Desktop.(see link how) http://desktop.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=10120 Note: Google Desktop index all files, but to see a live image example inside the search you can install a index plugin. I use also Google Desktop Search, and it index all files on my harddisk example: autocad files (.dwg), .mov , .kml and more.
