You probably want to read up on the Google Desktop Index API on
http://code.google.com/apis/desktop/docs/indexapi.html
To access the Microsoft virtual hard disks you will need to read and
understand the Virtual Hard Disk Image Format Specifications from
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/virtualserver/bb676673.aspx
There might be some libraries which can read the virtual hard disk.
You might want to check pages like code.google.com or sourceforge.net
for open source libraries to support your indexing plugin.
