I would look into the Export service that was just added.
You can export your spreadsheet files as a .xls file:
http://code.google.com/apis/documents/docs/2.0/developers_guide_protocol.html#DownloadingSpreadsheets

We have a few samples demonstrating download:
http://googledataapis.blogspot.com/2009/02/start-downloads.html

However, if you're constantly going to be changing that spreadsheet
data, I would recommend just using the Spreadsheets API to update the
live sheet in Google Docs:
http://code.google.com/apis/spreadsheets/overview.html
