Hi Ziv,

If you develop your gadget using the Google Gadget API, the methods to
communicate with external web services are fetch based. As you
mentioned, you would have to pull on intervals to see if there is
something for the gadget to process.

It sounds like working with remote data using a persistent connection
would require a Java applet or maybe a Flash app.
