Great question - I am working a bit with NetBeans too, however I'm very "green" to Java in general, so take that with a grain of salt. I do intend to develop google gadgets in NetBeans in Java though, sometime in the near future.
I have an idea - host your Java program files at Google Code, then just use the type "url".
