If you have RSS feeds enabled in your phpBB, you could either just use
the built in feed viewer of iGoogle (by adding the proper "+ Google"
icons on your site) or you can easily develop a gadget using the
example available here:
http://code.google.com/apis/gadgets/docs/legacy/remote-content.html#Fetch_JSON

As I am not a phpBB user, I am not sure what are your options to
access the private messages though. If there is a HTTP GET based API,
this would be possible using the info on the same page as listed
above. If not, this might be a bit challenging.
