I'm an avid user of iGoogle, mostly for reading news feeds from
various sources. One thing that really bugs me is having to scan
through stories I've already seen. The "Mark as Read" feature is
great, but there's a "loophole" that renders it almost useless for the
major news feeds such as Associated Press and Reuters.

Here's why: These news services continually re-post their stories
throughout the day with new time-stamps. This means that "Mark as
Read" will only suppress the current instance of the story. Subsequent
postings of the same story will appear as an unread story. In most
cases, the story has the exact same headline.

Since I'm not a developer, I don't know whether this is possible or
not, but it seems like this problem could be solved by modifying the
Mark as Read feature to look at headlines vs. whatever it is currently
using.

My question whether this would require a mod to the iGoogle reader
API, or if a gadget developer could implement this strategy using the
existing API?
