I believe normal best practices would be applied to a gadget for optimal results.
Static links with keywords in the text and in the url are both beneficial tactics, go for it. If you're using Google Analytics on your site, it will give you a referer which should be the URL from your gadget, this would be a good way to view traffic coming in from the gadget itself.
