Matt's RSS customizer was the foundation of my iGoogle home page. I spent days finding and testing different methods of getting nicer RSS feeds on the page, and it gave me the perfect solution. I even started developing my own gadgets to try and give myself something before finally giving up since all the things I wanted to do involved inlining anyway. Boo to Google and their random cutoff of all these great gadgets out there. I agree with the other posts that they must not care that much about iGoogle and treat it like an afterthought. It seemed like a very short time frame from giving out an API and then taking out some of the more powerful features with no alternatives, but maybe I was just taking having a highly functional home page for granted. I have relied heavily on custom developers for my gadgets since their own (mail, calendar, etc.) really aren't very good in comparison. I already lost my great gmail reader, and now with this change, I think I'm done with iGoogle as well.
