You cannot access the container. This is a script security limitation, since the gadget is rendered in an iframe served by gmodules.com. Since the container is not from gmodules.com, the two cannot communicate through normal means.
I doubt the API will ever allow arbitrary communication to the container, since that would allow gadget authors to manipulate the container. And that's something they are specifically trying to stop.
