In case anyone else finds this thread while having a similar problem,
I think I've figured it out. My guess is that you need to submit the
registration request using *exactly* the same URL under which your
gadget is in the iGoogle directory. I think I was omitting the www. -
which does resolve to the same gadget, but presumably  doesn't match
in the directory database.

In any case, I have gotten the gadget registered now, and have gone
ahead with my alias request. Hope this helps someone.
