Hi All, I'd love some feedback on my first gadget (http://bit.ly/cyKrfN ); it prepares words for the public service education website JogLab.com which helps users create mnemonics, acrostic poems, acronyms etc. (I run JogLab).
I'd warmly welcome general constructive feedback but also how about these specific issues: 1) Am I using target= _blank appropriately? What with different personal settings in browsers it's quite difficult to determine which behavior is sensible (for example I prefer not to have to reload iGoogle every time I navigate away from it but perhaps I'm in the minority?) (also see article The folly of target="_blank" http://bit.ly/cdjnt ) 2) When validating a gadget's XML/ HTML I get inconsistent reports using these tools: Google Gadget Checker (http://bit.ly/aF4WVH) Validome XML Validator (http://www.validome.org/xml/validate/ ) How can a Google gadget's code/ behavior be definitively determined? 3) Like everyone else I'm crazy busy; Google's help pages (eg Developer tools http://bit.ly/aVZ252 ) are the best on the web though for the first gadget maker there's a lot to drop when scrambling through 'here's how to build a space-station' style examples, sometimes means I miss the basics (for any newbie reading this: clicking on 'View source' after selecting an individual Gadget's page from (http://www.google.com/ig/directory) is a great way to figure out syntax and so on http://bit.ly/TV8ak is also informative) for example- I've looked how to update the author information associated with a gadget for a little while -perhaps as some of this information (eg email address) is specified in gadget module preferences this is a temporal issue and will be updated as Google indexes gadgets? 4) When connecting a gadget to Google Analytics as per Google's instructions here: http://bit.ly/9ZnXmP I still get a message "Tracking Not Installed": and no stats despite setting up an account pointing to the XML location and etc. More complete instructions? I suppose as it's not normal tracking code I might expect not to see any tracking confirmation? I would love to see a GoogleBot check out every (new) gadget and then send a customised email/ create a gadget report suggesting what was right/ wrong with each aspect and relevant links to fix/improve/learn more. Thanks everyone, Gadget making looks really worthwhile and I hope to hear from you.
