Part of the code that you've got in your gadget is Java rather than Javascript. To build the equivalent Javascript, you could try the spreadsheet protocol reference developers guide http://code.google.com/apis/spreadsheets/data/3.0/developers_guide_protocol.html. Unfortunately I don't see a Javascript client library available.
