The gadget migration tool at http://gadget-migration.appspot.com/ is a good way to update your code. There's also a Legacy Gadget Migration Guide at http://code.google.com/apis/gadgets/docs/migration.html in case the migration tool doesn't work for you. After the deadline we're not intentionally breaking the legacy API but we won't be providing support for it any more. It's also possible that parts of the legacy API may break, we won't prioritize fixes for it and some breakages on the legacy API may not be fixed at all.
