I'm new to this as well so you may get a better answer than mine.

The gadget source should start with something like "<?xml
version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>"

See the source of working gadgets in the igoogle directory for
examples. This is the xml for a callendar
http://www.google.com/ig/modules/calendar3.xml

If your source does include the xml line, then it may be a problem
with GGE not the checker (I think I had the same message)

1. GGE doesn't work properly with Google Chrome Browser - so use IE
or Firefox.

2. If I pasted my gadget into GGE it was incorrectly re-formatted,
the only way to get my gadget into GGE was either "upload" (from file)
or open from URL (but I can't remember which!)

That said, you may be wasting your time anyway as apparently
submissions to the gadget directory are no longer processed - so no
one will see your gadget! This was raised here
http://groups.google.com/group/bloggerdev/browse_thread/thread/d22f67cea5223332?hl=en
but no one from Google has bothered to respond.
