The source of the Gmail gadget wouldn't be helpful for what you're doing but if you're interested the library used to build Gmail web client is the Closure Library, which was released as open source last year at http://code.google.com/closure/library/docs/gettingstarted.html (there's was a blog post which better describes the relationship between Gmail and Closure at http://googlecode.blogspot.com/2009/11/introducing-closure-tools.html ).
