Using makeRequest() is I believe just a way of making an XMLHttpRequest. To the best of my knowledge, XMLHttpRequests are not able to upload the contents of local files.
However, the W3C are working on a new version with support for byte streams http://www.w3.org/TR/XMLHttpRequest2/ with the file api.
