Actually that's what I thought... As we don't have any way to get the 'identification' http get parameter (the gt I'm talking about above), it is not possible for someone out of Google to be using this api. It is a pity we can't use it, gmailjson looks awesome for Gmail integration in lightweighted Google gadgets! I might create a ticket at the link you provide. Thanks again.
