I was hoping to have an answer as well. I asked the same question.

I think the Google Gadget Editor might go away. Open Social is independant 
from Google so it will live on so you could in therory host your gadgets 
yourself... but you have to set it up.
There are several products from Google that use Gadgets: Googles Sites and 
Spreadsheets (Google Docs) for instance. I'm hoping they don't retire 
Gadgets from those (especially Google Sites).

But I'm pessimistic about the future of Gadgets since iGoogle was the 
flagship Google product that used Gadgets.

This is aweful because Gadgets are a great way to share pieces of the web. 
Much better than Apps since people can embed them on their website which is 
a very different experience for users than a standalone app.
For instance we created an app to comment live football matches and people 
could embed the live feed inside their website. We're having a lot of 
demand from clubs to use this on their websites. Not app can replace this.
