I was hoping to have an answer as well. I asked the same question. I think the Google Gadget Editor might go away. Open Social is independant from Google so it will live on so you could in therory host your gadgets yourself... but you have to set it up. There are several products from Google that use Gadgets: Googles Sites and Spreadsheets (Google Docs) for instance. I'm hoping they don't retire Gadgets from those (especially Google Sites).
But I'm pessimistic about the future of Gadgets since iGoogle was the flagship Google product that used Gadgets. This is aweful because Gadgets are a great way to share pieces of the web. Much better than Apps since people can embed them on their website which is a very different experience for users than a standalone app. For instance we created an app to comment live football matches and people could embed the live feed inside their website. We're having a lot of demand from clubs to use this on their websites. Not app can replace this. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "iGoogle Developer Forum" group.
