Unclear whether this needs to be in core, or can be fully expressed in an
extension, but if it is to be, we need to expand the SPI to support it, as
I think it would incur a cost on those who didn't need it if it were in
core. For now, I'm putting this into a "New" component in the issues, as
we figure out how best to do this.
