OK, notabug. Guice 3 works fine. Trunk works fine. The problem was - agentlib:yjpagent (i.e., yourkit) which had snuck onto the JVM args.
The error was robustly happening in injected constructors until I started working on a test case, and then it suddenly moved to a non- injected class. I apologize for the ruckus.
