No official gmail api.  There are two known ways to subvert this:

If you want to treat gmail as a webservice try this:
http://libgmail.sourceforge.net/

it's a python lib that has reverse engineered gmail.

If you want to use the existing gmail page but want more features you
can either write your own using Greasemonkey

Fortunately, it only works with Firefox so now you have a good reason
to get everybody in your organization of Internet Exploder. ( yes I
know,  it's just a delusion I like to foster ) ;)
