Google AI Overviews -- still a travesty
I continue to find Google Search AI Overview answers utterly
unreliable. I do not trust them at all. When they appear, I just
scroll down immediately to the blue links. I'm not using workarounds
to block Overviews -- Google could prevent those from working whenever
they choose. If Google had any respect left for their users, they
would provide a per-account setting to disable them completely if
users so chose.
Too often I've found the Overview answers to be in direct
contradiction to the information in the (barely visible links) to the
associated sources. Gemini completely misunderstood them. Happens with
enormous frequency.
If I have to double-check -- as Google urges -- these AI Overview
"answers", then they are useless. I don't care if they're 90% correct
or 50% correct or ... whatever. Trusting them is a fool's errand, in
some cases a dangerous one. If there are 10 glasses of water on the
table and 9 are fine but one will put you in the hospital from
contamination, are you really going to choose a glass of water from
that bunch?
And of course, Google isn't taking any responsibility for these
Overview answers, perhaps the best demonstration that they know how
inaccurate they are. This will likely come back to bite Google very
hard at some point.
Overall, still a travesty.
