On fascism and social media
I've been using "social media" since long before the term was coined,
all the way back on Usenet and the early days of ARPANET. So my
experience stretches back a very long way relatively, and I've
probably typed many millions of words over the years in an array of
mailing lists, groups, and other what became known as social media
forums and contexts.
The one constant that I've seen for this very long time, mainly
just increasing in scale as the Net grew and became public, is the
immense amount of (in the end) essentially useless discussion with
like-minded individuals that led nowhere and (ultimately) let evil
fester in a variety of ways.
And while it's clear that Internet technology writ large has played an
enormous role in our current situation, by enabling misinformation and
disinformation on an extraordinary scale -- something I predicted
(back in ARPANET days) would eventually transpire, it's also my
opinion that we continue to use these resources in ways that serve
mainly to help pass the time or provide "feel good" jolts, but still
permit evil to grow and triumph.
I won't say more here right now. There are old essays of mine
somewhere from far back that went into this in detail and
unfortunately are more relevant today than ever. For all the good they
ever did. Which was absolutely none. -L
