I am also looking for a good way to backup pictures on an external
drive, and at the same
time cut down the pictures in size to keep it manageable on your
mobile laptop (which
happens to be the way i work most of the time).

So ideally i'd be able to do this:
  - identify pictures or folders to send to the backup device
  - once done, cut the pictures in size
  - have the backup device still be available in picasa, when
connected
  - preserve the text (labels etc.)

one application-independant way to preserve text would be to store
them in the
exif header, with another application.
