I did not use this method, which is much too complicated...
Just use wine-1.1.37 on an Ubuntu 9.10 (and on a 8.04) and run :

env WINEPREFIX="/home/patrice/.wine_Test" wine picasa36-setup.exe

This will create a separate wine environment and install Picasa on this
environment.  This avoid interaction with other windows programs.

The shortcut created on the Desktop has the environment variables
correctly set. 

Picasa runs fairly well in this configuration, face recognition is OK, 
network connection to Picasa Album and Google Contacts is correct.
(the "Manage Adress book" function does not work, I think this is due to
the lack of "real" IE in this configuration)

I did not check the move of data from windows to Linux, because all my
photos are already on Linux.
