As we know, Google has stopped developing Picasa for Linux. The time and effort it took to shoehorn the Windows app into a Wine install (and contribute code to Wine in so doing) was evidently too much, considering the number of people actually using Picasa on Ubuntu. Which is a shame to me, since Picasa truly is the best app of its kind, and so is Ubuntu.
A native app would require even more time to develop, and since Picasa for Linux failed the first "is it worth our time" test, a native app would seem even less likely, though I would love to see one (closes eyes, bows head, folds hands, and dreams of typing "sudo apt-get install picasa4"). My more realistic hope is that, since Google is all about "the cloud", they're developing an online version of Picasa, fully-featured, and accessible from all platforms. That, to me, would be a more likely "Google" thing to do. And I would love them for it. In fact, Google did buy online photo editing site "Picnik" back in March, and I have to wonder if there's not some grand plan there that would merge the best of both Picasa and Picnik into one wonderful online offering...
