I've replicated the bug reported that was similar:
http://code.google.com/p/gmaps-api-issues/issues/detail?id=847

Please star that issue, and let me know if you think the bug you're
experiencing is distinct from that bug.

I've replicated your bug, but I believe it's the same issue. It's getting
404s for hybrid tiles when it errors out.
