I just tested; it appears that we don't remove the default icon if you set
an icon after the fact. I'll report it as a bug.
So, you'll need to create the Marker object inside the callback, or start it
with a "dummy icon" (perhaps an embedded image).

For the second approach, I meant using a program like Photoshop to color the
icons yourself. You could also generate them using the Google Charts API:
