I believe I found the cause - I created a custom zoom controller (verticalSlider) with an eventChangeHandler. While the slider snapInterval property was null any zoom changes made with the slider were subject to produce the "Warning: Filter will not render. ....."
Once I gave the slider a snapInterval value of 1, performance was greatly improved and the warning went away.....
