You can keep a persistent array of the markers you have added to the map and peruse this array checking for the presence or lack of X, then set the "visible" property of the markers accordingly. As far as I know, which admittedly is not that far, the maps API does not provide a method for retrieving all marker or overlay objects you have added to the map.
