Hello David, The API reference is very detailed, and kept up to date. Tutorials are great, but personally I like to start with a hello world like application, and then have the API reference open and just aim for my goal. This is how I learned both flex, and the API. The API is robust and straight forward, as for getting demos to work, keep in mind that you need to make sure you have proper references setup to the proper SWC, and that you are using the right application. It's rare that you're going to find a tutorial to do exactly what you're looking to do, if you do you're lucky. Just take small steps. Try this out:
http://code.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/flash/tutorial-flex.html and if you're still having problems, we can help you as best as we can here.
