I don't see any reason a constant string wouldn't work. What I was asking you to check was if the variable you were using had a value set and it was getting passed correctly. Perhaps you variable was not in the correct scope or your reference to it was incorrect. I'll have to try it in one of my maps to see if there is a reason you can use a constant.
