When the div is not displayed, the browser tells the API that it has 
zero size, and the API configures everything for a map div of zero size.

If you know what size your map div is going to be, then you can add 
{size:mew GSize(400,400)} when you create it. See:
http://code.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/reference.html#GMapOptions

If you don't know the size in advance, then you need to call 
map.checkResize() after you show it.
